These digital currencies will allow for state-backed real-time settlement of fiat and tokenized assets.
Tokenization platforms such as Securitize, tZERO, and Polymath are paving the way for a new generation of financial instruments issued, traded, and settled entirely on-chain. These platforms cater to public and private markets and are aligned with regulatory frameworks, enabling compliant access to blockchain-native securities that settle in minutes rather than days.

Hybrid systems that allow legacy and blockchain platforms to communicate seamlessly enable incremental adoption, minimizing disruption while achieving operational gains. These efforts are transitional toward a fully digital and distributed financial system.

Despite rapid advancements, several constraints limit the full-scale adoption of distributed ledger systems in post-trade operations. Legal recognition of blockchain-based records and smart contracts remains inconsistent across jurisdictions. Collaborative projects that include financial institutions, fintech innovators, and regulators are building the foundations for widespread trust in DLT. These initiatives generate blueprints, legal frameworks, and interoperability protocols that will support the evolution of post-trade settlement from slow and risk-prone to instant and secure.
The acceleration of DLT adoption represents a fundamental shift in how risk is managed, assets are moved, and trust is established across capital markets. By embedding automation, transparency, and decentralization at the infrastructure level, distributed ledgers offer a systemic solution to the settlement risks that have plagued global finance for decades.
